Koji Takeuchi

graphic designer / artist

He makes things that make you look twice — but they still have to work.

Koji Takeuchi is a Tokyo-based graphic designer and artist whose work spans more than three decades. He has worked independently throughout his professional career, often in close collaboration with musicians and other creators.

Long before he knew anything about graphic design, Takeuchi was already fascinated by unexpected similarities. As a young child, he made school research projects out of shapes that looked like other things: the map of Japan became a seahorse, Shikoku resembled Australia, and prefectures turned into unexpected objects. At the same time, his obsession with insects and dinosaurs led to a fascination with convergent evolution — unrelated animals arriving at strikingly similar forms.

His work has never settled into a fixed visual style. It moves freely between typography, symbols, illustration, patterns and images. What remains consistent is the instinct to look past categories and find relationships between things that appear unrelated.

Visual Equivalence

One form, more than one reading.

Letters become images, people become patterns, and a single form can carry more than one identity at once. Takeuchi calls this recurring visual method Visual Equivalence. The name came much later than the habit itself.

Music & Collaboration

Music has been a constant presence throughout Takeuchi’s career. Working independently rather than from inside a label or agency, he has repeatedly collaborated with musicians as fellow makers. The strongest collaborations happen when both sides share enough context, trust and groove to go beyond the original brief.

Approach

Look closely.

See relationships between things that appear unrelated.

Make them visible.

Surprise matters, but surprise alone is not enough. A logo still has to read, information has to be organized, and the work still has to communicate. For Takeuchi, craft is a form of manners: technique makes freedom possible.

And it helps if it makes you smile.
